1788 Great English Georgian Sterling Silver Caster / Shaker by Nathaniel Smith
1788 Great English Georgian Sterling Silver Caster / Shaker by Nathaniel Smith. Presented is a great old English Georgian sterling silver shaker or caster. This piece dates to 1788 and was made by Nathaniel Smith & Co. The caster is done in a handsome, classical form, with a round pedestal base and balustroid body. A lovely and useful piece, easy to match to a variety of table settings. This piece is in great overall condition.

There have undoubtedly been some minor dents removed over the years, but nothing significant in our opinion. There are no splits, no breaks, no dents, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no repairs. This piece is hallmarked on the side of the base with the lion passant for sterling silver, the crown for the city of Sheffield, the date letter w for 1788, King George III's head duty mark, and the maker's mark for Nathaniel Smith & Co. These marks are somewhat worn, and the date letter portion in particular runs off the edge somewhat, but all four marks are repeated much more clearly on the lip of the lid.

This piece stands about 5 3/4 inches tall. This piece weighs 72 grams or 2.5 regular ounces.
