ENGLISH LARGE STERLING SILVER GEORGIAN CAKE BASKET. MADE BY HESTER BATEMAN 1790. Please to offer this stunning large Georgian cake basket made by questionably the most well regarded 18th century female silversmith, Hester Bateman.

Her work is highly sought after, and very collectible. This cake basket is one of the largest pieces she made. Hester Bateman is known for her beading, bright cut engraving and pierced work. This gorgeous basket of neo-classical design is a perfect example of her skill as a silversmith. The oval elongated bowl displays her bright cut work, pierced reticulation along the entire circumference combining a continuous scroll work interspersed with stars and wreaths.

There is also in interior border of bright cut work with circular punches & swags. Originally the interior of the bowl was plain silver. Regency or Victorian repousse after decoration of flora and fauna was added.

The basket sits atop a matching oval cage of reticulated slots and open top circles adorn her bright cut work of tiny dots culminating on a raised linear fluted base. The original handle is plain with a fluted ridged pattern, and moves freely with no play and stays upright. The basket stands 10 inches tall to top of handle and 4 inches to top of rim. The basket is 14 inches wide, and weighs 680 grams (21oz) Clearly stamped on both handle and side with her makers mark of HB in script, and lion passant for assayed English sterling. Leopard's head with crown, for London, and date letter of "p" for 1790, Regents head for George III.
