Georgian Silver Snuffbox, William Pugh 1809 Birmingham - English Elm Leaves. This stunning sterling silver snuffbox was made by Birmingham maker William Pugh in 1809. Notably, one of his snuffboxes is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York City. The box has been expertly engraved with a repeating pattern of English Elm leaves.
The English Elm, which would have been a common sight in 1809, was decimated in the 20th century by disease, making it a particularly nostalgic motif. This snuffbox features decoration on every surface, an elegantly constructed hidden hinge, two sets of hallmarks, and a gold-washed interior. The lid fits tightly as it should. Its condition is excellent, as shown, with only light signs of use. It measures 3 inches long x 1.75 inches x.
