Nice Set 12 1778 Georgian English Sterling Silver Dinner Forks. Presented is a fine quality set of 12 Georgian English sterling silver forks. These forks date to 1778 and were made by William Sumner I & Richard Crossley. The forks are done in a lovely classical style, with four tines and a distinctive upward turn at the end of the handle. The forks are a good size, large and sturdy with a nice feeling of weight in the hand.
Each handle is nicely engraved with a crest of a hawk. Each piece is hallmarked on the underside with the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopard's head crowned for the city of London, the date letter C for 1778, and the maker's mark for William Sumner I & Richard Crossley.
The forks are in great overall condition. There is some surface wear, but nothing excessive or more than is to be expected from pieces of this age. The crests are nice and crisp, and the hallmarks are in fairly good shape overall as well.
There are no splits, no dents, no breaks, no monogram removals, and no repairs. Each fork is about 7 7/8 inches long. The weight for the forks is 842 grams or 29.5 regular ounces.
