The bottom opens for storage of the nutmeg and to hold grated nutmeg, and the top opens to grate the nutmeg.There is a crease where it was probably forced at some point - it is on the bottom and is clearly visible in the final photo and allows for a slight opening at the bottom - which is still closes firmly.
